Protecting Yourself From Gum Disease

Posted .

Gum disease can have a serious impact on your health. Not only can you lose teeth and bone mass in your jaw if you don’t treat the problem, but you are also at risk for heart and respiratory problems, and you may even increase the danger of developing dementia.

There are a number of things that can cause gum disease, but you can take an active role in its prevention. Tobacco use greatly increases your chances of gum disease, but by and large, the biggest contributor to gum disease is the buildup of plaque and tartar on your teeth. Your body reacts to plaque with swollen gums, which allows plaque and tartar to then accumulate below the gumline, where it can’t be reached with your toothbrush. This in turn, allows bacteria to enter your body and bloodstream, leading to health complications.

The best way to fight gum disease is to brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, floss once a day, and see your dentist twice a year for routine cleanings and exams. Your dentist can often spot the signs of gum disease when it is in its earliest stages, and can suggest ways to combat it. You may need to change your brushing and flossing habits, or medication or surgery may be required.

At Patient-First Dental Care, Dr. Gayle Fletcher is proud to offer Perio Protect®, a non-invasive way to attack and neutralize the bacteria that is making its home in the pockets of your gums. Using a tray made from a custom mold of your mouth to allow medication to penetrate your gums, fighting the infection, and giving your gums a chance to heal. You wear the the tray in the comfort of your own home starting with 2-3 times a day.
