Intro to Bioesthetics
Occlusion (the bite) is the most misunderstood area in dentistry. Dentists are taught using a model that accepts tooth wear as normal and inevitable. The truth is, wear is a disease and should be viewed as such.
Patients present to dental offices everyday to correct esthetic and bite-related problems. They get a cosmetic “Smile Makeover”. Most of the problems are due to grinding and clinching and this cosmetic cover-up will never be the fix. Everyone has had a door that drags the floor when opening and closing. The door did not get bigger; the door frame shifted. You can shave off part of the door to get it moving without dragging, but most of the time it starts to drag again as the house continues to settle. This is what happens in the “Smile Makeover”. You have the broken or worn down teeth covered up and it does look good for a while, but as your bite continues to change, this fix starts to break down. Why would we think we can ignore what is causing the destruction and have the fix last? Doesn’t it make sense that this cosmetic cover-up will eventually breakdown again?
Bioesthetic dentistry is founded on a model of health. We analyze the bite, make a diagnosis and perform treatment that will solve the problem. This does not happen with the cover-up. When we restore our patients to proper form and function, wonderful things happen. The patients have a release of tension around the eyes, relaxation in the muscles of the face and neck, fullness of the lips and a more aesthetically pleasing look. A Bioesthetically restored patient receives the gift of “Natural Lasting Beauty®.”
I believe that when you look into fixing your smile you should make sure you ask the right questions. If you don’t ask the right questions you’ll never get the right answers.
The right questions include:
- What is the problem?
- Why is it happening?
- What can be done to fix it so it will last a lifetime?
Why would you ever let a cosmetic dentist change your smile when you can have a Bioesthetic dentist change your life?
